Inpatient census 2018: part three

Results from the Hospital Based Complex Clinical Care (HBCCC) and Long Stay Census.


Key Points

Some key points from this report include:

  • There were 1,773 Hospital Based Complex Clinical Care or Long Stay patients at the 2018 Census.
  • The patients in the Census were mostly from older age groups. Only 32 (2%) patients returning full data were aged under 18, while 800 (45%) were aged 65+.
  • Most patients in the Census identified as White Scottish (71%).

Key findings: Patients in receipt of Hospital Based Complex Clinical Care (HBCCC)

  • 937 patients were receiving Hospital Based Complex Clinical Care.
  • 672 (72%) patients receiving HBCCC were occupying a Mental Health, Learning Disability or Addiction Inpatient Bed in an NHS Scotland facility at the Census date, 223 (24%) patients were in a General Acute/Community Hospital NHS Scotland facility, while 42 (4%) patients were treated out with NHS Scotland.
  • 54% of HBCCC patients were male,44% were female. 2% were unknown or not recorded.
  • 438 (47%) had a consultant who specialised in Psychiatry of Old Age.
  • 269 HBCCC patients (29%) had been in hospital less than 6months at the Census date.

Key findings: Long Stay patients (who are not in receipt of HBCCC)

  • There were 836 Long Stay patients who were not in receipt of HBCCC.
  • 643 (77%) Long Stay patients were occupying a Mental Health, Learning Disability or Addiction Inpatient Bed in an NHS Scotland facility at the Census date, 69 (8%) patients were in a General Acute / Community Hospital NHS Scotland facility, while 124 (15%) patients were treated out with NHS Scotland.
  • 65% of Long Stay patients were male, 33% were female. 2% were unknown or not recorded.
  • 278 (33%) had a consultant who specialised in General Psychiatry.
  • 182 Long Stay patients (22%) had been in hospital for at least 5 years.
