The Scottish Fishermen’s Federation, the Scottish Creel Fishermen’s Federation, and the Western Isles Fishermen’s Association, in conjunction with Marine Scotland, have implemented voluntary measures for three newly designated MPAs which have features requiring recovery. These will be replaced by statutory provisions as part of the management implementation programme.
At South Arran MPA there are three areas identified that will be essential for the recovery of the maerl beds.
At Wester Ross MPA there are seven areas identified in which there are discrete areas essential for the recovery of the maerl beds.
At Upper Loch Fyne and Loch Goil MPA there is one area identified that could host a recovery of the flameshell bed.
The participants in this agreement invite other Associations, Federations, and non-affiliated fishermen to also participate in this arrangement.
Due to a breach of voluntary arrangements at Wester Ross MPA, a Marine conservation Order was implemented on 18 August 2018.
A Marine Conservation Order was implemented on 01 October 2014 for South Arran MPA due to a breach of voluntary measures.
