Salmon Liaison Group

In parallel with the Conservation status system, the concept of a salmon conservation plan has been introduced, with the purpose of providing a national understanding of the factors that may be having an effect on the conservation status, and a sense of the evidence supporting those assertions.

With the Wild Fisheries Reform programme continuing in parallel, the Salmon Liaison Group (SLG) has been created to steer the development of the methodology behind the conservation status system. A number of technical working groups have also been created which will be overseen by this primary group.

The remit of the Salmon Liaison Group is to inform the process of refinement of determining conservation status and develop an agreed template for salmon conservation plans through:

  • working with Marine Scotland about the approach for the 2017 season and over the longer-term

  • comment on and agree the draft remits for the proposed topic-specific working groups, and discuss potential additional technical working groups

  • developing, agreeing and reviewing a template to provide a national understanding of the factors that may be having an effect on the conservation status and a sense of the evidence supporting those beliefs

  • where appropriate, working with the wider network of biologists to identify individuals with the appropriate expertise to sit on topic-specific working groups

  • keeping the wider network of biologists, and local stakeholders, informed about the process and a forum through which local information can be assessed and incorporated

Review of Technical Working Group Outcomes

On the 8th December 2017, the Salmon Liaison Group held a workshop to:

  • review progress made to date by the exploitation rate, grilse-error, electrofishing data and fish counters working groups

  • promote discussion on the conservation regulations system for 2017

  • consider next steps for the future

Workshop materials are now available online.
