The SRTMN has been designed using a series of GIS metrics that have been identified as good predictors of water temperature. The network aims to cover the range and combinations of predictor variables observed in Scotland and is intended to maximise statistical power and minimise site redundancy. This methodology was presented at the BHS 2014 'Challenging hydrology and practice' conference and later published Open Access in Hydrology Research.
Deployment of the proposed sites began in summer 2014 in collaboration with Fisheries Trusts and District Salmon Fisheries Boards. The SRTMN sites are shown below:
