The fishery data held by Marine Scotland (MS) are obtained from returns made annually by the proprietors, occupiers or agents of salmon and sea trout fisheries throughout Scotland.
The MS Topic Sheet no. 67, Collecting the Marine Scotland Salmon and Sea Trout Fishery Statistics, describes how the annual survey of salmon and sea trout fisheries is carried out and summarises the available data.
Copies of the net fishing catch form and the rod fishing catch form are available to download.
In December 2018 Marine Scotland issued Topic Sheet no. 103 asking fisheries to start recording fishing effort as rod days for the 2019 season onwards. A number of stakeholders have sought further information on this initiative and additional information can be found in our Rod Effort FAQs.
Currently over 2,000 forms are issued annually, of which over 90% are returned. Return rates by district for the latest published season and annual all-Scotland return rates since 1997 are available.
It is important that salmon and sea trout catches are reported. It is a legal requirement that catch forms are completed accurately and returned. Reliable catch data is also a key requirement if we are to accurately assess the status of Scotland’s salmon stocks. As these forms and associated correspondence may contain personal data, we have produced a Privacy Notice describing what we do with the data and how you can contact us if you have any concerns.
