Sustainable Flood Management

Why are we funding this package?

The increased risk of flooding associated with climate change is raising the profile of flooding in Scotland and how we manage the risk to lives and property. A more sustainable approach to flood risk management will help to reduce this increased risk of flooding.

Sustainable flood management means planning at a catchment level and considering a wide range of measures to reduce the risk of flooding. We consider that natural land use management techniques, such as managing flood plains and restoring wetlands, are an important component of sustainable flood management.

Where areas suitable for natural land use management techniques are identified as part of a wider catchment flood risk management plan, the landowner may apply for funding under this package to carry out the approved works.

What will this package achieve?

Sustainable flood management includes making good use of a catchment's natural capacity to store water and so reduce peak flows in watercourses and reduce the risk of flooding. This package will encourage sustainable flood management by identifying areas which could be used to temporarily store flood water and so help them to contribute to a catchment level flood management plan. This package focuses on restoring and maintaining natural flow regimes and water levels, but it will also support some soft engineering solutions where required as part of a catchment level flood plan.

This package will help to reduce the threat of flooding to people and their property by:

  • maintaining natural flow regimes and water levels and,
  • improving flood water storage and so flood control.

It will also help improve terrestrial and freshwater ecosystems by improving or creating new habitats.

What can you do?

You should choose which of the following Options will help deliver the outcome you have selected.

We suggest the following Options may all be appropriate.

Some Options- shown in the top list - will always deliver the desired outcomes. If you choose any of these Options, you will not be expected to provide any justification for choosing that Option.

Other Options - those in the bottom list - will only help achieve the desired outcome in specific circumstances. If you choose any of these, the application system will ask you to explain how you see this Option helping to achieve the outcome. You can select as many, or as few, Options as you think you will need. You must judge which Options will most effectively deliver the desired outcomes taking account of your circumstances.

You should ask your local authority if your farm or land is identified as being within the areas where natural flood management can make a difference to lowering flood risk and bring other benefits. If that is the case you may be able contribute to sustainable flood management.
