New Entrants and Young Farmers

Why are we willing to fund this outcome?

If it is to prosper into the future, farming needs to attract a steady flow of new entrants and young farmers with drive, innovation and entrepreneurial skills. The main incentive for new and young entrants is a profitable industry which has good opportunities. At present, however, farming does not offer sufficient returns or opportunities to attract the numbers of new entrants that the industry needs. The Scottish Government is therefore keen to offer support to new and young entrants so that they can make the most of their business and the opportunities that arise.

What will this package achieve?

This package will encourage more new entrants and young farmers to set up and develop profitable, sustainable farming businesses. It will encourage them to develop new business opportunities and to make sure that their businesses are modern and make efficient use of the resources available to them.

The package consists of a range of support measures which should help new entrants and young farmers to develop profitable, sustainable businesses. Most of the measures provide enhanced grant rates to young farmers (that is, farmers who are under 40 years of age). Also, there is a dedicated measure for new entrants, which is available to young farmers who have set up as head of a farm business for the first time and are in the first year of that business.

Other support available under the SRDP

There are other options available under the SRDP that can help you to develop your business. For example, Crofters might find that the Crofting Counties Agricultural Grant Scheme (CCAGS), administered by the Crofters Commission, can provide useful or more appropriate support.

You should also remember that the RDC - Rural Priorities includes options that can support your business development (for example, training, business audit, membership of Food Quality Assurance Schemes, modernisation through electronic data management).
