FONE - Current Land Opportunities 2019

The FONE group is working with all organisations to identify possible opportunities.  These organisations will rightly advertise any new opportunities in their normal way but SG will also host these through this dedicated FONE website.

East Lothian Council – have available farmland for let adjacent to B6371 at Cockenzie (April to October 2019). Highland Council are offering Croft Arthur, Tain for a 5-year MLDT 7.57ha - 2 plots are being advertised with potential for 1 or 2 new entrants (April 2019): https://www.highland.gov.uk/downloads/download/1669/croft_arthur_tain


Information for Letting Organisations in 2019

The FONE group attach significant importance of appropriately matching candidates with available opportunities.  To assist in this, a guide to selection process (including a new scoring matrix) to help decision making has been developed, please click on link to download document: FONE - template FES version. Members of FONE have also committed to making themselves available to support the decision making process. 


Over 5000 hectares of Public Land has been made available for new entrants up to end 2018

  • Crown Estate - had a total of 8 farms over the last three years have been let to a combination of next generation successors and brand new entrants across the Crown Estate in Scotland amounting to 3,600 hectares.

  • Highlands and Islands Enterprise (HIE) secured a new entrant tenant for their site of 6.21 hectares at Lochshell, Wick in November 2018.  This is a SLDT lease of 10-years with a 5-year break is available.  HIE confirmed they used FONE scoring matrix to assist with the process.​

  • Scottish Water secured 2 new entrants on grazing lets through SLDTs in September 2018. The areas secured (12 Ha) in Ballater and Whiteadder will allow new entrants to move to larger scale farming at end of the 5-year period.

  • East Lothian Council advertised Agricultural Land in Tranent on their website and secured a new entrant tenant whose lease commenced in April 2018 (8 Ha). East Lothian Council confirmed they used FONE scoring matrix to assist with the process.                                                                                                      

  • Scottish Ministers Estate - in 2018 secured 2 Crofters new entrant leases in Barra (1.978 Ha) and Benbecula (6.295 Ha) -  a total of 8.273 hectacres.

  • Forest Enterprise Scotland (FES) secured 31 new land opportunities all Short Limited Duration Tenancies (SLDTs) on the National Forest Estate and 17 were awarded to New Entrants in 2018: Further details below (2016 and 2017).

Using this FONE scoring matrix has provided new land opportunities to mainly new entrants across the National Forest Estate (NFE) over the last three springs:

Spring 2018

  • 31 sites offered; 17 awarded to New Entrants.
  • West Argyll, 10 units; Cowal and Trossachs, 1 unit; Scottish Lowlands, 4 units; Dumfries and Borders, 2 units​.

Spring 2017

  • 19 sites offered, 14 units went to New Entrants.
  • West Argyll, 3 units; Cowal and Trossachs, 2 units; Scottish Lowlands, 3 units; Dumfries and Borders, 6 units​.

Spring 2016

  • 7 sites offered​, 6 units went to New Entrants.
  • West Argyll, 1 unit; Cowal and Trossachs, 1 unit; and Scottish Lowlands, 4 units.
