Scottish House Condition Survey - Data Access

Data Access

The simplest way to get results on the SHCS is to examine the publications that have already been published, which are available via the Publications and Reports page.  Providing access to the underlying microdata is of interest to users who wish to undertake their own analysis.

  • Datasets provides access to key microdata releases
  • Special Datasets offers opportunity to access more detailed microdata
  • Follow-up Surveys allows access to a sample frame for secondary studies

Datasets

Public Datasets

Public datasets available for download have been temporarily removed from the website while we apply important updates and backdate methodology improvements. We anticipate the updated data will be available to download in 2019.

In the interim, users can apply to receive a special dataset.

Special Datasets

A request to be provided with a special dataset can be submitted where the standard anonymised datasets do not contain all the information you require.  This should allow users to undertake more detailed analyses for a specific project.

Such requests are made by completing the Scottish Household Survey special dataset pro-forma, which asks for the data specification needed to inform the decision on releasing the required information. Please also refer to the SHS Special Datasets guidelines document, which provides useful background information as to when and how you should apply for access to an SHS special dataset.

The pro-forma should be completed and submitted to either the SHCS Project Team, or the SHS Project Team.

A list of previously approved data requests is available from the SHS Website.

Follow-up Surveys

A follow-up survey provides opportunities to researchers to use the SHCS to identify a sample for follow-up research. This may allow more detailed probing of certain sub-groups or variables of interest, and to examine under-lying issues within the data.

If you wish to submit a request then please refer to the SHS Follow-up Survey guidelines page which contains useful background information as to when and how you should apply for access to an SHCS Follow-up Survey. It also contains a  pro-forma which asks for the data specification needed to enable a decision on releasing the required information to be made. The pro-forma should be completed and submitted to the SHCS Project Team.

A list of recent requests for SHS follow-up survey projects is available here.
