Housing Statistics

We publish statistics on Housing in Scotland. Our outputs cover affordable housing, new housing supply, rents in the private sector, local authority housing, and social housing.

Our current Publication Series are in the table below, with links to the main reports, tables and outputs. Links to statistical news releases are also given as these provide a brief, user-friendly overview of each statistics publication. An archive of our previous publications and detail on data sources and quality are also available.

A summary of activity in new build housing, affordable housing, and sales of social housing in Scotland.

Excel tables - Affordable Housing Supply Programme approvals, starts and completions by social rent, affordable rent, and affordable home ownership and by new build, off the shelf and low cost home ownership.

Excel tables - New build starts and completions: All sectors, Private led, Local authority, Housing associations, social sector, and a summary of new build activity including annual completions by sector since 1920. 

Sales of social housing, and Empty properties and second homes (December update only) are also included.

Private Sector Rent statistics

Information on Private Sector Rents across 18 Broad Rental Market areas in Scotland.

These statistics are largely based on market-level advertised new let rents and do not represent changes in rents for existing tenants.

Other Housing Publications

Homelessness statistics include the numbers of homeless applications, assessments, and outcomes each year, and numbers of households in temporary accommodation. Information on advice provided through Housing Options (e.g. number of approaches made, number of outcomes achieved) are also available.

Housing & Regeneration Performance Indicators are published which gauge progress on each of the four key Housing and Regeneration outcomes.

Quarterly Housing Market Reviews are available, which collate a range of statistics on house prices, housing market activity, cost and availability of finance and repossessions.

Housing Revenue Accounts include statistics on local authority housing income and expenditure. 

Funding and monitoring information on Help to Buy (Scotland) includes information on the number and value of sales, along with characteristics of those who have participated in the scheme.
