  • There were 17,263 full-time equivalent (FTE) police officers in Scotland on 31 December 2015.

  • This is an increase of 1,029 FTE police officers (+6.3%) from the 16,234 police officers recorded at 31 March 2007.

  • Police officer numbers have increased by 3 FTE officers in the last quarter from 30 September 2015, and have increased by 10 FTE officers in the last year from 31 December 2014.


The statistics released today were produced by professionally independent statistical staff free from any political interference, in accordance with professional standards set out in the Code of Practice for Official Statistics. The statistics directly inform the Government’s on-going commitment to 1,000 extra police officers from the 16,234 police officers recorded at 31 March 2007.

The statistics in this release are based upon quarterly returns made by Police Scotland to the Scottish Government, and are a by-product of administrative processes, generated directly from HR systems. The published police officer figure is sourced from Police Scotland’s personnel records and as such the quality and reliability is good.
