PROJECT 3: THE ROLE OF THE PUBLIC SECTOR IN REALISING THE BENEFITS OF SCOTLAND'S RURAL LAND
Aims & Objectives
The main aim of this project was to provide a better understanding of the role the public sector can play in encouraging and facilitating approaches that deliver a wide range of benefits from Scotland's land resource.
The specific objectives for the project were as follows:
- to assess where there is a rationale for the public sector to play a part in ensuring a wide range of benefits from Scotland's rural land resource, taking into account existing knowledge of current and future drivers for land use;
- to identify the different types of measure (e.g. regulation, incentive payments, communication) available to the public sector to encourage and facilitate approaches to land use that deliver a wide range of benefits from Scotland's rural land resources;
- to assess the effectiveness in the long run of the different types of measure that could be used to deliver the wide range of benefits from rural land use (drawing where appropriate on evidence from other countries);
- to identify opportunities to align the different types of measure to contribute to sustainable economic growth and more widely to encourage and facilitate integrated decision-making on rural land use.
