Family Matters - Couples

Family law provides legal rules about responsibilities and rights between couples; between children, their parents and other people who have an interest in the children's welfare for example grandparents or extended family. Over the last 20 years or so there have been major changes in the way families are formed and how people think and feel about families. Families now come in all shapes and sizes, and every family is important no matter how it is formed.

Recent changes in the law in Scotland have reflected the changing nature of the family. These include the Family Law (Scotland) Act 2006 and the Civil Partnership Act 2004.
