PAW Scotland Bird of Prey Crime Hotspot Maps 2010-2014

Maps

Map 1: Bird of prey poisoning incidents in Scotland 2010-2014 shows the distribution of incidents of confirmed poisoning reported to Science and Advice for Scottish Agriculture (SASA) from January 2010 to December 2014.

Map 2: Bird of prey poisoning incidents in Scotland 2014 shows the distribution of incidents of confirmed poisoning reported to SASA for 2014 only.

Map 3: Bird of Prey Crimes Recorded in Scotland 2013-2014 shows the distribution of confirmed incidents of crimes against birds of prey recorded by Police Scotland from January 2013 to December 2014.

Map 4: Bird of Prey Crimes Recorded in Scotland 2014 shows the distribution of confirmed incidents of crimes against birds of prey recorded by Police Scotland for 2014 only.

These maps show incidents reported to SASA and/or Police Scotland, where birds of prey have been confirmed as the victims of poisoning or other crimes. Where several incidents have been reported for the same area, the number of incidents has been aggregated to show ‘hotspots’; the greater the number of incidents the larger the ‘spot’.

Tables

Please note that the number of poisoning incidents does not necessarily indicate the number of birds poisoned. For a summary of the number of bird of prey species poisoned over this period please see Table 1 below.

Table 2 shows a summary of all the bird of prey crimes recorded in 2014 and the species involved. As it may not always be possible to quantify the number of birds affected by, for example, a case of disturbance, this table shows the number of incidents.

In addition to this, some of the incidents on these maps involved the recovery of poisoned baits and poisoned corvids, as well as the carcasses of the birds of prey that were poisoned. A more detailed account of each poisoning incident is available from Tables 3a-3e in the PDF booklet below. Tables 4a and 4b provide more detail on all bird of prey crimes recorded in 2013 and 2014.

Further information is available in the Q&A about the maps project. >>

Note: Two of the six 2014 poisoning incidents are the subject of ongoing police investigations, and no further details of these have been released. These two incidents are therefore not included on either of the poisoning maps, which will only show four poisoning incidents for 2014. The maps will be updated at a later date.

Note: As above, two of the six 2014 poisoning incidents are the subject of ongoing police investigations, and no further details of these have been released. These two incidents are therefore not included on either of the recorded bird of prey crime maps, which will only show 17 crimes for 2014, rather than 19. The maps will be updated at a later date.
