Energy Consents

windfarmThe Scottish Government's Role in Determinining Applications for Energy Infrastructure

In Scotland, applications to build and operate electricity generating stations and to install overhead power lines are made to the Scottish Ministers for consent. Applications are considered by Scottish Ministers where they are:

  • for electricity generating stations in excess of 50 megawatts (MW)
  • for overhead power lines and associated infrastructure, as well as large gas and oil pipelines

Such applications cover new developments as well as modifications to existing developments. Applications below these thresholds are made to the relevant local planning authority. Applications for marine energy (e.g. wave, tidal and offshore wind) are made to Marine Scotland. See the attached links for information on Marine Scotland consents. Marine Scotland also provides guidance on monitoring watercourses in relation to onshore energy developments.

Current and Previous Applications and Decisions

We have now created our new publication portal and have placed over 200 cases with approximately 5,500 associated documents online to allow public search and viewing of documents relating to applications for energy consents.

The new portal can be found at www.energyconsents.scot

Decision notices for new Ministerial determinations for wind farms can also be accessed via the portal.
