Certification Handbook

The Building (Scotland) Act 2003 introduced the option of certification for work requiring a building warrant. Certification is based on the principle that suitably qualified and experienced building professionals and tradesmen can be responsible for ensuring that specified works comply with the building regulations without the need for detailed scrutiny or inspections by local authorities.

The Certification Handbook explains:

  • how the certification system works;
  • how certification schemes are approved and governed;
  • how Approved Certifiers can be directly appointed;
  • the roles and responsibilities of those involved in the certification process;
  • the application process:
  • for a certification scheme
  • to become a scheme provider
  • for a direct appointment as an Approved Certifier
