This report is a requirement of Section 103 of the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 and Section 124 of the Marine and Coastal Access Act 2009. The MPA network supports the Scottish Government’s vision of clean, healthy, safe, productive, biologically diverse marine & coastal environment, managed to meet the long-term needs of nature and people.
There are now 217 sites in the Scottish MPA network for nature conservation
purposes. In addition there is one demonstration and research MPA, eight historic
MPAs, and five Other Area Based Measures recognised as part of the Scottish MPA

A total of 42 new MPAs have been designated since 2012 to protect marine habitats, wildlife,
geology, undersea landforms, historic shipwrecks, and to demonstrate sustainable
management of the sea.
