Why is this HEAT standard important?
The standard supports a commitment to achieve improvements in the early diagnosis and management of people with dementia. This is supported by physical and mental health reviews every 15 months along with an assessment of carers needs which includes an appraisal of the impact of caring on the care giver.
How are we performing?
The performance measure used for this standard is the number of people with a diagnosis of dementia on the Quality and Outcomes Framework (QOF) dementia register and other equivalent sources. The number of people on this register increased from 41,525 in 2011/12 to 41,947 in 2012/13, an increase of 1.0 per cent.
As the number of older people is projected to increase over time, so too are the number of people with dementia. To ensure that the proportion of people likely to have dementia who are on the QOF is maintained, plans are underway to amend this standard from maintaining the number of people with a diagnosis of dementia on the QOF to maintaining a percentage of people likely to have dementia. Results under this amended measure will be presented once published by ISD Scotland.
The graph below shows the number of people diagnosed with Dementia since 2006/07.
Note: Dementia figures used for the HEAT standard include data from sources other than QOF for a small number of practices that do not take part in QOF. They can also include data from a small number of practices that do not have signed off QOF data, as these non-signed off data still contribute towards the target. As a result these figures will differ for some NHS Board areas from the main QOF prevalence data published elsewhere.
